Not one to leave brooding in the past, Moby has come forth with a 10 minute commitment remix of George FitzGerald’s ‘Burns.’
Here is a list of present noises: Two chords on a reverbed electric piano, techno high hats and kicks, clapping from three different sizes of hands, a crystal wine glass toast ding, bongos under hands presumably of a consistent size, and split second artifacts and interruptions of someone’s wonderful voice, “Every part…Cold.” The effect is empty-apartment romantic, moody as a fresh man in thick rims looking out a penthouse window and living a summation of Britney Spears’ ‘Lucky’ without any irony. And yet it works.
Despite what Eminem thought was representative of most of the world but was actually a small pocket of Detroit, Moby is making music of broad appeal. Many of us do listen to techno.
For someone who’s been in the game as long and as prominently as Moby, it’s nice to see some vulnerability and sleeved-heartedness that seemed temporarily present in factions of the 90s, but is today almost exclusively Drake or commercialized feelings sold by top 40 hits. Whether he’s read it or not, there’s nothing of the Infinite Jest ilk in Moby’s latest release. The only jadedness present speaks to the person’s regard for itself. The vocal choice is vague enough in syntax but rich with emotional sonority that what we end up with is a pensive track exploring a sense of lack. Pair this with with Moby’s sparse but rich production and we have a partnership of parallels which unites for the sole purpose of galvanizing insurmountable isolation. Outstanding. ⛰️
