January 18, 2019 - Debay Sounds/Capitol Records
Following the release of single after single after single the past two years, I fell for the quirky, anthemic girl-power-pop sound of Maggie Rogers. I was very excited when her first studio album was announced. Two years is a long time to want something. But upon listening to Heard it in a Past Life, it’s clear that not much else has been brought to the table beyond what was already set for dinner. In fact, many of the tracks seem specifically crafted to fill in the spaces between my favorites that I’ve been listening to for months already (namely ‘Alaska, ‘Light On,’ and ‘Falling Water’). Maybe this is just my bias as one of many watching her dreamy viral story unfold over such a long stretch of time. Maybe I was too quickly obsessed with every single she laid out and should have saved my appetite for the package deal. Maybe I’m simply ready for newer, fresher Maggie Rogers already. ☔
