I am often bored by remix albums because many of them are difficult listens from start to finish, curated for the utilitarian purpose of supplying DJs with varieties of a song or an album to play out in a club and unconcerned with being coherent as standalone bodies of work. Not only is Hundreds of Days Remixes by Mary Lattimore not even remotely close to the islands of boredom, it manages to begin with a haunting 23-minute-long Jónsi remix of ‘It Feels Like Floating’ that holds my attention through and beyond it despite demanding a lofty temporal investment for an opening track (if interested, here are my full thoughts on it). To listen to this remix collection is to meander with cell phone shut off, noticing in off-ness the vibrancy, energy and multitude of textures all around in new light—details often overlooked, softly roaring, and cohesive by nature. My favorites include Julianna Barwick’s remix of ‘Never Saw Him Again’ and the Sin Fang X Memryloss remix of ‘Their Faces Streaked With Light and Filled With Pity.’ The fact that such a rich variety of musicians can see themselves in Lattimore’s work is a testament to the brilliance of her songwriting, and each remix elicits a discovery of something new and surprising in the Hundreds of Days album we all thought we knew so well. ☔
