Mike Levy, French Gemini and producer known as Gesaffelstein, returns to his violent techno roots with NOVO Sonic System, seventeen minutes of dystopian grinding on ruthless synths. Yet still the artist has softened from his 2013 album Aleph; what signature throttling remains in NOVO is tempered with punk and rock influences, and perhaps his time spent with American artists notable for their own softness has lent further plush: The Weeknd, Kanye, and Pharrell (though among them his softness is most endearing). Having stripped away the bareness of his tracks (whether this constitutes irony or not, I am unsure) Gesaffelstein has crafted an album in which one is constantly expecting to hear a gun cock, but may also expect to survive another day. ⛰️
