Ross from Friends’ (Felix Weatherall’s) new EP, Epiphany musically picks up where Family Portrait left off. Epiphany EP opens with the song ‘Epiphany’ which itself begins by whispering, “None of this is real,” and continues to say, “This is a dream,” adding orchestra hits and chord sweeps to drive the point home. Avoiding the fact that the EP is named after his sister, whose name is if you didn’t guess it, Epiphany, the collection of tracks, goofy though not heartless, give off a certain subversiveness unseen in his previous work. Yet the sentiment only carries forth in specified readings of the track titles, which follow: ‘Revolution’ and ‘Phantom Ratio,’ the latter of the two borrowing the catchiest words from Tissue-Phantom Ratio, which refers to variance in methods such as radiotherapy in affecting the targeted region of a cancer cell; so does all of this add up to awakening, revolting, and targeting the cancerous cells in a society that keeps its inhabitants lulled and oppressed below full consciousness, does it hint at a maturing Weatherall or reveal the confirmation bias of a hopeful listener who has internalized a meaningful transition and expansion on an artist’s worldview that is actually just a playful album about Weatherall’s sister, Epiphany? ⛰️
