Multi-instrumentalist Georgia Barnes is back with a multi-course feast of a multi-tracked album. Seeking Thrills is Georgia’s second full length project behind her self titled 2015 debut, carrying the same if not more energy and earnestness. There’s a lot to unpack with this record; the scope is large and the styles and themes immediately strike a personal chord for anyone born in February in the early 1990s.
The project is filled with those small and fleeting moments of spontaneity that create instant repeat plays; it brings me personally back to the days of high school marching band bus trips and iPod minis and secret hand holding.
The project displays clear musical influence weaving in and out of the nineties, snaking through the early 2000’s and emerging in the present with all the best parts of the 2010’s leached and used for growth; it brings me personally feelings of nostalgia not rooted in anything concrete but rather blanketed over the past twenty nine Februarys I’ve experienced.
The project and its creator are very percussive-forward; this makes for a very pleasant listening experience for me personally as I am also very percussive-forward with my feelings and moods.
The project is crafted from a very rich sonic palate, employing thick analog synth riffs and a multitude of auditory effects; it is clear that Georgia has a deep appreciation for the world and history of musical technology.
The project ends on an alternate version of the third track ‘Never Let You Go;’ this alternate version is superior to the first take and I have since replaced the track with its alternate version on my copy of the album.
Seeking Thrills is a densely packed album that feels very distinctly like the inside of Georgia Barnes’s mind while at the same time feeling like a planetarium of the musical influence of Georgia Barnes projected on the walls outside of her mind. Tracks such as ‘Honey Dripping Sky,’ ‘Started Out,’ and ‘Till I Own It’ are infectious from the outset, while other cuts on the record take time to latch on, rooting down with repeat listens. This album is a strong start to the decade and I’m anxious for more.🍍
