Barcelona’s PALLADIAN is back off of last month’s Arms and Sleepers edit with a fresh original cut. Field recording ambiance opens up to a wider world of plucked strings and distorted vocals, setting the stage with a thick layer of emotional fog. As an anthemic cadence begins to rise, being shared by the kick drum and bass line, the plucked tones begin to multiply, ping-ponging around the space like small orbs of light. This opposition provides the main tension for the piece, the heavy lower tones marching ever onwards as the quieter melody dances nostalgically in and out of focus. The vocals lean into this feeling, becoming louder and more urgent as the audio pressure swells.
Luxembourger producer Sun Glitters provides an alternate take on ‘Carpets,’ releasing some of the tension from the original by slowing the pace and shifting focus on the textural landscape. Percussive elements are pushed back in the mix, with rhythm from what sounds like coins or the zills of a tambourine rubbing together, providing a lot of the structure. This treatment gives the edit an intimate ASMR-type feeling, like running your fingers through the spectrum analysis chart of original. These two tracks work well together, like tiny windows peering into a exotic yet familiar world from our cold apartment isolation. 🍍
