March 6, 2020 - Radical New Theory
Newcomer Ozzy née Oscar Jones is jumping into the cold waters of March with not one but two releases on not one but two labels each containing not one but three songs each. The Dutch-Australian artist brings an eclectic sensibility to the table with Een, a tale of texture, ambiance, and rhythm in three parts.
‘Een Goed Moment’ starts immediately darker than one would expect from the title, spaced out percussive taps bouncing off the cold walls of an empty club. An equally chilly melodic riff slides in underneath, filling the space until it ultimately takes over for the percussion. Things open up after this, with a catchy bassline adding depth and stability to the mix. It’s a contemplative piece that offers Jones a chance to stretch his production through an interesting narrative. ‘Een Slechte Middag’ brings the atmosphere a bit closer with a more organic drum kit played in tandem with warped and effected set of tones. As opposed to ‘Een Goed Moment,’ the percussion here follows a tighter structure with the melodic elements taking the plunge through the randomizer. Shapes weave in and out of being, sometimes plucked, other times bowed, always moving, with levels of sharpness and grit being played like an instrument themselves. ‘Een Open Deur’ turns its focus to texture, weaving delayed, reverbed percussion into a round onto which a rich breakbeat is gently laid. A thick digital didgeridoo floats down from on high, enveloping the track like a down duvet. It’s a slightly simpler and shorter equation than that employed by the first two tracks, but it’s just as effective.
Een marks both a beginning for Jones as a producer and for Radical New Theory, Teneil Throssell aka HAAi’s new imprint. A beginning this strong is welcome in this turbulent year. 🍍
