Sovereign - 'Maara'

Newcomer Sovereign is here offering a new single, ‘Maara.’ The Latvian-born Brighton-based producer Toms Jankevics weaves sensual textures together with a tumbling, hard-edged danceability to create a climax nearing the peak of Everest. The track is built as a series of builds, leading further and further up behind its main melodic force—a juicy, twinkling plucked string instrument. The Eastern European folk phrases are spacious and mysterious, providing contrast to the sharp, grimy bass lines. The edge of each build bursts with potential energy, tension being used to Jankevics’s advantage. The beat is initially established with a meaty kick and harsh clap, reminding us that this is a human experience as we gain elevation. Once the bass rolls in, we are lost in the atmosphere, dancing with the light with free-flowing optimism. It’s a relatively short meditation, but while it lasts, the piece feels like the wind chimes on a hot air balloon floating amongst the Himalayas. It feels great up here, where the air is clear, above it all, shining in the wind. 🍍
