Sydneyside-Berliner Samantha Poulter aka Logic1000 steps back into the party she started with her 2018 debut self-titled EP. The two-year walk around the block to catch some air has been refreshing, but the guests were just starting to wonder when Poulter would return; wonder no longer as Poulter is back and bearing gifts.
‘Perfume’ ramps the energy level up from the start with a hearty kick pulsing through an empty hall. A tight piccolo snare dots the landscape, sounding out like the flash of a strobe light. The hall is empty but not deserted; the ghosts of club-goers past fill the space, only sporadically visible freeze frames of bodies in motion. Here the energy plateaus off. It’s still relatively high but kept static, tension stretching off like an eternal buildup. The voice of Cleavland’s Myron Lavell Avant rings out over the floor, thin and spirit-like, like a light ethereal mist trailing between lips, drinks, legs. It’s a fitting use of the sample, with sentiments of loss and betrayal mixing with feelings of loneliness and distance. Bubbly melodic percussion fills in the gaps towards the tail end of the piece; the tension remains right up until the end with little room to breathe—it’s intoxicating.
‘Blossom’ comes in a little harder with a heartier kick and tight percussive riff. Cotton-candy chords duck in and out of the kick and bass as underwater tonal-drone slices slice through to the surface. The empty hall is now in low earth orbit, and the ghosts of club-goers past now lounge in mid-century modern furniture drinking space cocktails and reminiscing about a future-past that never was or will be. The chords are squeezed through a ping-pong delay throwing their atmospheric presence around in mini-orbit before allowing room for an infectious bass line to take over. The piece ends faster than it seems it would, teasing the senses for more.
For now, the party is still going strong. Perfume / Blossom is the next signpost in Poulter’s journey through the genres, samples, and rhythms of dance. Word on the street is she’s working on more new material, including a remix for Caribou’s latest LP. We only hope the next signpost shows up soon. 🍍
