PALLADIAN rounds out the season with a final single on Future Archive Recordings. Following similar sentiments set forth on their previous releases, the duo journeys forth inward, zooming in on a moment like a fractal. Dusty piano chords dance lightly around sliced vocals in a hopeful way, with every bar restarting the journey upward, like snowflakes caught in a crosswind pausing in midair before continuing their fall. This treatment of tension works its way throughout the other instruments, with a sharper bass mirroring the chords of the piano and a soft string section peeking in towards the final seconds. Once again the vocals here are kept at arm's length, feeling and emotion allowed to pass through but abstracted and foggy. PALLADIAN uses this abstraction to great effect, propping up tender nostalgia against a very dancefloor-friendly awareness.
Denver-based producer Edamame takes the core elements of ‘Fur’ and stretches them slowly over open flame, drawing out new intricacies and folding in some of his own. A muted trap beat takes backseat to dreamy melodic lines that seem to exist in two timelines at once. It’s a straightforward approach that works well with the source material, providing a sunrise to PALLADIAN’s mysterious dusk. 🍍
