November 13, 2020 - Kompakt
Copenhagen’s WhoMadeWho is back on Kompakt with a journey through the ins and outs of collaboration during the global pandemic. The trio, consisting of Tomas Barfod, Tomas Høffding, and Jeppe Kjellberg, has a diverse sonic background with roots in electronic production, rock, and jazz. Throughout the course of the year, the three worked with various artists and producers from around the world, sometimes in person, sometimes at great distance. The resulting results were split into three separate projects which were then rejoined for this November release.
The pieces featured here flow effortlessly through time and space, taking on as many personalities as are featured on the credits while retaining the cohesive glue that comes from having the same three minds act as the final filter. There is a vein of melancholy that flows down the core of each track, the sort of dank, gloomy atmosphere known to come from the Central Nordic Dance Zone. Tracks such as ‘Dream Hoarding’ with Frank Wiedemann and ‘Twenty Tears’ with Rebolledo flicker between dusty indie sentiments and the laid back groove of the dance floor. Many of the songs feature prominent vocals, such as ‘Hibernation’ with Sainte Vie and ‘Shadow Of Doubt’ with Adana Twins, pulling the reins in different sonic directions. A stunning piece with our favorite Robag Wruhme rounds out the tracklist, offering a calm look back and a hopeful look forward on what is to come.
Synchronicity flows steadily along its own path through the sitting room, dancefloor, and train ride alike. The large cast of talent and genre does not overwhelm, but rather works strongly together, finely filtered and considered by WhoMadeWho. 🍍
