Wojtek Grabek’s recent track, a rework of Saigon Would Be Seoul’s ‘If This Is A Man,’ traverses an album in miniature. The Polish composer and violinist demonstrates the elemental core of the original track, molten with the materials of a powerful story in multiple expressions. The piece comes from The Human Stain, the latest album from Saigon Would Be Seoul, aka Mirza Ramic and one half of Arms and Sleepers. Ramic, who was born in Bosnia & Herzegovina, uses the project to explore his personal journey of losing his father and surviving as a refugee with his mother.
Quickly Grabek establishes his fingerprints in the unassuming introduction, gradually making himself more apparent. At the heart of his reimagining lies a simple reverberated chord. It’s a powerful bridge, which serves as beginning, middle, and end, compounding in poignancy and intrigue throughout the song. The track is a fitting and masterful nod to Ramic, whose artistic center lies within the question “what if?” In Grabek’s rework, we have both an answer and another iteration of the question, one possibly which begs the question of more possibilities. ⛰️
