Octo Octa - She's Calling EP

February 5, 2021

February 5, 2021 - T4T LUV NRG

Maya Bouldry-Morrison aka Octo Octa is back to close the chapter on themes the artist explored on her For Lovers EP and Resonant Body LP way back when in 2019. In the space between those projects and this latest release, Bouldry-Morrison has solidified herself alongside partner Eris Drew, cementing their party/tour T4T LUV NRG into a record label run out of New Hampshire, releasing a huge compilation with fabric presents, and hosting back-to-back BBC Radio 1 Residencies spanning 12 months.

Bouldry-Morrison dives back into the exploration of music as and in tandem with ritual with She’s Calling. Both the length and depth of this EP are deceptively concise, with three tracks spanning exactly 20 minutes. The tracks hit at the root of dance music and its ability to transcend other forms of communication. The ability to lose oneself in the rhythms and undulations of dance music remains whether the experience is solo or communal. The various expressions that manifest while dancing, the sweat, the cardio, the feelings, the lust, the admiration, the abandon, all connect to the same human place. A place of refuge. A place of sharing. A place of joy. A place of sadness. Bouldry-Morrison traverses these emotional fields with ease, leading listeners on journeys that transcend time and space. A short alpine hike leads to a hidden rainforest grotto, behind the waterfall is an opening to an arid orange desert; as the sunlight fades in the distance, the moon rises on a calm beach, waves shimmering all around. The first two tracks ‘Goddess Calling’ and ‘Find Your Way Home’ act as mini mixes themselves, with exciting transitions that combine two disparate-seeming ideas into one cohesive thought. The final piece ‘Spell For Nature,’ throws an emotional fog over the project, with Bouldry-Morrison using her own voice to lead listeners on a guided meditation through the unknown.

For all the ever-present uncertainty that has been re-discovered recently, there has been an equal amount of certainty unearthed. The rhythms that drive, connect, and inspire continue to flow, and artists continue to capture, re-discover, and create. We submit ourselves to Bouldry-Morrison as she pilots these waters, ever forward and ever present. 🍍
