January 28, 2022 - PLZ Make It Ruins
Amidst the thinnish musical offerings typical for being had in the month of January, Joe Thornalley has released a new musical offering. The London-based producer who produces under the name Vegyn produced seventy-five musical productions in an attempt to fatten up January’s production tally. The resulting project, titled Don’t Follow Me Because I’m Lost Too!!, offers more than a humbling sentiment-laden title. It is a pleasant collection of pieces.
This style of release isn’t unprecedented for Thornalley—2019’s Text While Driving if You Want to Meet God! looks much the same, down to the jumbled titles, listed BPMs, and use of title exclamations. Don’t Follow Me does hit a nice 75 tracks compared to Text While Driving’s less-pleasing 71. The tracks here don’t take up too much space, averaging out at about a minute or two. That’s not to say they lack depth, though. The sketch-like pieces offer up little vignettes into larger worlds, each one hinting at rich emotional undercurrents, elaborate wall decorations, thoughtful elegance. Apart from the occasional lemon, most beg to be put on repeat at least once.
Though Thornalley claims to be lost, the project is a comfortable space for him to occupy. There is an air of enviable confidence in releasing a large collection of sketches, but then again sheer volume can work well to create such an environment of put-togetherness. The raw pieces offer just enough of a tease; often that’s where the juiciest bits are, before they are stretched out, tenderized, and marinated into a longer, less interesting full-length. 🍍
