September 16, 2022 - Butter Sessions
Hottest-act-to-follow Jennifer Loveless’s techno house EP Around the World is a nightclub dancefloor’s collective dream of summertime—a high-energy montage of golden hour light, the golden age of disco, funky psychedelic visions, buttery smooth production, and powerful command of the soundwaves. Fun in a bottle, there is so much sunshine to the square inch in each of these six sweet-scented daisy dance tracks.
A slinky bass defies gravity and walks up the stairs in ‘Muzik,’ and a catlike sound mews upward over the addictive beats, into the sky like a pussy rocket.
‘Around the World’ starts like someone pressing their hands into some Jell-O and watching it jiggle, or rubbing the surface of pool water. Splashing the gemstone clarity, rendering the sunshine into wiggling sharp fractures of glorious turquoise, getting lost in the act. Eventually splashing so hard it gets the lifeguard’s attention.
In ‘Reverse Cowgirl 2’ and ‘Fall in Love,’ Loveless rocks dual opposing melodies back and forth, playing with symmetry, a wave upon a wave, double-dutch, complementary upbeats and downbeats. They fit together in your brain like a groovy syncopated jigsaw puzzle.
‘Club Stomp’ is a delightfully squeaky cacophony as satisfying as flossing a robot’s motherboard.
Choose your own adventure—is ‘YamaHA!’ laughing at you or with you?
All of the songs on Around the World are sensual, filled with a bit of cheeky innuendo, and highly danceable, even if you are listening at home with your cat. Don’t resist the urge to move. It’s good for you to air things out a bit. Air it out. Be the rooftop. Good, sunkissed reflected heat, dance through the sweat in your sweats until the sun sets. I know the world sucks, but it’s ok to feel good! Fly on, you resilient bee. ☔
