Amsterdammer Maurits Verwoerd aka Nachtbraker sets sail for the cosmos in his latest EP, the Capichone EP EP. Verwoerd straps into a whimsical fusion of nostalgia and advanced technology, complete with a kitchenette, cozy sleeping quarters, and an observation moon roof; a venerable camper-van of a spacecraft. The journey wraps around the infinite wonders of the universe with a juicy 90s-house-inspired soundtrack giving meaning to the various visual phenomena.
Verwoerd plays around with minimal maximalism. Percussion generally takes the forefront of the audio attention, with heavy kicks giving structure to floaty cymbals and plucky chords. Droopy synths drone on in the background, painting a picture of hazy color and shape with the stardust. Tracks like ‘Capichone’ and ‘Etherflem’ display a sense of timelessness. Melodies and basslines feel familiar and lived-in. ‘Inbellen’ then pushes the needle into more modern obscurity, as whispers of Steve Mensink’s effervescent after-shave scent mingle with the aromas of fresh-brewed coffee. It is meaty. It is good. It is warm. ‘Treunq1’ plunges the temps way down, to a level of chillness found in the void outside the safety of the camper spacecraft. Tensions play tag, whirling around an eventual solid bassline. It’s a gleefully dark piece of dance. Happy camping.🍍
