Jason Chung is back with a new full-length project, a labyrinth of fractal worlds folding into each other, soft and easy and dark and deep. The album departs the now-typical Nosaj Thing blueprint, leaning much harder on the vocal-features-side of the spectrum than any of his previous journeys. Vocalists such as Julianna Barwick, Duval Timothy, HYUKOH, and Toro y Moi enter Chung’s carefully crafted micro worlds, adding to the equation rather than taking it for themselves. There is balance here, a rarity for this type of project. Each track maintains its own identity.
Again, I’ll use the term “micro world.” Again, I’ll say balance. Again, soft, easy, dark, deep. Like ripe grapes on the vine. Beautiful as a whole, beautiful as individuals. Beautiful to bite, beautiful to pick, to crush, to ferment, to age, to bottle, to age again, to open, to drink. Chung’s patience is on display. His ability to wait and let the sound stand on its own, only adding what is necessary to complement. There’s no hiding in the production, it’s all here. As it has been for the past 16 years. Timeless is a way to describe this project, but may be more appropriate to describe Chung’s work overall.🍍
