January 1, 2018 - Nervous Records
We admit it. We don’t know much about NYC underground record giant Nervous Records. We don’t know anything about Peppe Citarella except that he is from Italy. We don’t know anything about Cristians Afrotronic except that his name keeps tricking the autocorrect and that he is from Peru. We have no idea what language is being spoken on this record. We do know that 'Moyubba' bumps. It bumps really nice.
Electric bass. Timbales. Shakers. Cowbells. Bongos. Triangles. All these elements and more combine to form a rolling groove of percussive expression that really captivates. Tracks like this send dancers to nondescript foreign lands where they feel like they are on vacation; no job, no bills, no worries, just dance. We ourselves can’t understand the words that are being spoken throughout the track, and we aren’t sure that makes a huge difference to the overall feel of the song. The vocals are spoken and heavily delayed; they come across slightly mantra-like, as if the speaker was leading a meditation group.
We could see this track being played over a traveling DJ tour montage, complete with pans over exotic tropical locations, slow motion crowds going ‘wild,’ and planes taking off and landing. The track has the air of some old gem of a record that has been dug up, cleaned up, and pumped up. It’s the kind of track that when you, a famous but still underground DJ, put it on, everyone in the audience winks back at you because they know. They know this fire is going to make them feel good. And you, the DJ, you wink right back.
It’s true, we should know more about Nervous Records, more about Peppe and Cristians, more about music. But we hate music, truly. So you can’t hold it against us. After all, we’re just starting out, and there wasn’t a lot of information readily available. 🍍
