2019 is coming to a close (praise be) and we here at We Hate Music would like to highlight some of the records that slipped through the cracks. Happy Holidays and hope you enjoy.
Part Lana del Rey, part Elvis, part Stephen Merritt, Orville Peck brings Canada into the Country Western Rock Ballad arena. His baritone crooning, spacious instrumentation, and luchador mask lend a certain Hollywood nostalgia to his melancholy narrations; but the sorrow is hitched to a bullish gusto. Fits of energetic swells, which in ‘Buffalo Run’ take on a surf rock intensity, help the album vacillate between genres and influences from ballad, to synth-wave, to pop punk, creating a truly illuminating niche that both appeals to a hunger for reemerging traditions and discovers new musical estuaries; let’s say it: Pioneer Cowboy. ⛰️
