May 31, 2019 - Pampa Records
Having been an impactful German for so long, Dave DK finally released a great new EP under Pampa—which we love—called Chicama EP, presumably after the small coastal town in northeastern Peru (Puerto Chicama) where some locals claim to have ridden a single wave for 2.2 km; far be it from me to call them liars, having never surfed a day in my life and having no scope of wave durations except in my imagination (which still tells me 2.2 km is a far ride); that in mind, at least one layer of meaning arrives in the track titles: ‘Jelly Legs,’ ‘El Point’ which is the name of a great long-riding wave according to locals, and ‘Chicama.’ If a body wasn’t inclined to hear it before doing this small research, it certainly is present afterwards; “it” though previously unnamed refers to the surfer sort of on-and-off-shore romanticism and hearty chord-progressions not undercut, but destabilized with islander syncopation (though Chicama is not an island). Destination electronic at its finest, poignancy, vibrance, and peace of mind inhabit the swells of Chicama EP, enough to make one homesick for places and times of which one has never been a part; here are some words to help us cope:
Hiraeth
Anemoia
Liberosis
all of which can be found lingering in Chicama EP. ⛰️
