July 26, 2019 - Self-released
Chance the Rapper’s latest release, The Big Day, stops short, swerves, and stumbles. For all intents and purposes, The Big Day betrays itself as Chance’s first album, revealing through its disjointed nature and wide cast of contributors to be a compilation album in which Chance is featured on every song rather than a Chance album on which many artists are featured. The product turns on its head the idea of a debut, and what stands upright is a rapper known for his depth and storytelling now penning disingenuous fables without complications, without character, and without bravery. ⛰️
