This debut album is a unified concept for musicians and music nerds alike: what happens when you position the godlike control of electronic music production against the organic improvised conversations of a jazz ensemble’s session? After a while though, Workaround hits you over the head so much with that concept that you stop listening to what it is saying—like when you smell sweet wonderful flowers over-and-over again until your sinuses are clogged. As a maximalist who craves the power of brevity, I think it could have said just as much with half of its track list. ☔
