Spectral Frequency is the first full release on R&S Records by the UK’s Special Request, aka Paul Woolford, and it is a work of two complementary edges—one that cuts to the touch and another that’s felted. The namesake track ‘Spectral Frequency’ sizzles and buzzes your brain to the breaking point of an appliance overheating, then drops into manic drum and bass with more energy than I can manage at this moment in time; as it toes the line of my sanity, I can imagine what it’s like to be a fly on a neon sign. The final tracks ‘Family Doggo’ and ‘No Other Way to Say It’ follow the destructive force of the EP’s beginnings like cool sentimental blankets of affection, with subtle textures and atmospheric moods to soothe what preceding frequencies stirred up; with Spectral Frequency, Woolford scratches then heals, but we’re not sure why. ☔
