Robag Wruhme is back, this time dipping the ladle into the punchbowl of fellow German and relative newcomer Brascon’s full length project Vän. The contents of ‘Treesong’ are poured into the awaiting vessel, overflowing with a lush sonic vocabulary. Samples from the original track trickle down the side of the ornate punch cup. It’s a strong beverage, with Brascon aka Georg Zweiniger having woven a dark and moody foundation for Seasoul aka Vanessa Sonnenfroh’s ethereal vocals to inhabit.
Wruhme takes this mixture and sets it alight. Bright, chipper percussive elements dance with sharpened piano micro-stabs with reverb tails that stretch off to infinity. Original melodic lines are wrung out, distilled, and charcoal filtered into a potent spirit base for a rich and complex cocktail. A cheeky bassline undulates underneath for the duration of the piece, like the undercurrent of an ancient forest stream. Spicy distorted cymbals play catch and release with softer piano lines that are given room to breath for a moment, then snuffed out to make room for other flavors. Some of Sonnenfroh’s vocals take on a citrus-forward approach, repetitive and percussion-like, while other vocal selections balance this out with a light sweetness, full words allowed to ebb and flow with ease.
Like many Wruhme tracks, it’s a lesson in balance. Joyful and somber, nostalgic and forward-thinking, energetic and relaxing. Despite being filled to the brim with tiny samples, distortion, and heavy reverb, the piece remains light and airy, never dense yet never sparse, and always crystal clear. Perfect for a punchbowl for one. 🍍
