Barcelona-based duo PALLADIAN is here with a reexamination of the track ‘Black Out / Sun Shine’ by New England-based duo Arms and Sleepers. The piece originally served as a brief audio respite on the back half of Arms and Sleeper’s early 2020 SAFE AREA EARTH LP. PALLADIAN has applied some contour makeup, taught it a few fresh poses, and slipped it a sip of Red Bull or two to get it ready for a solo night out.
Sampled atmospheric fog rolls in, setting a moody foundation for the thick, steady bassline. Though the BPM is slightly up from the original piece, the pace still feels a bit restrained here; there’s certainly room to push the speed, especially in the context of a live setting. Crunchy percussion elements fill the gaps between the playful bassline and kick drum exchanges. Lighter vocal calls are given room to occupy their own space, tingling like a cool breeze on a late night, eyes closed and bodies moving. The energy level remains mostly steady throughout, transporting the listener to their Better Place without distraction or complication.
PALLADIAN took a soft track from Arms and Sleeper and gave it a reason to go out on its own. There is a higher contrast from a more direct percussive palette, but the somber atmosphere from the original remains intact. It has been a welcome mini night out during this year indoors. 🍍
