Moving through the synthtastic shadows with her eyes always skyward and head turned to the light, Caroline Polachek’s Billions EP places an airy pop song duo into our laps like a warm kitten. Namesake ‘Billions’ is blissful, full of very sexy allegories and swells of major keys with injections of a little lofty dissonance in Polachek’s signature vocal cracks. Her voice is pure and wild, and it pierces the environment built around it, which hugs her closely like a primordial soup of jelly and light. It ends in a sweet angelic chorus of the euphoric self. ‘Long Road Home’ holds carefully onto more mystery. While still playful, it feels important, full of a bright determination and a forward momentum as Polachek soars like a goddess over powerful undulating waves of an open synth ocean. She sings like she’s alone, like it’s sacred. We watch her cross the passagio and lift herself off the ground for a brief moment in time, levitating. ☔
