Created for the historic Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn, Mary Lattimore’s single ‘Moon Over Deetjen’s’ is an elegy for a feeling of a place, a lullaby, a tender whisper. The impressionist continues to impress as she documents her experiences in life using the unconventional means of the harp, which gets a bit of a bad rep for being cumbersome to carry and shallow in sound. Even when the intentional mood is sweet, as it is in this track, Lattimore expertly and casually plucks a few extra strings in the strumming chords that add a touch of bite, slight dissonance, chaos to the order, a tiny nod toward a runaway nature. It’s a little bit of memento mori woven into the angelic sounds of her instrument that keep us grounded with her in the moment. ☔
